Innovative Programs

Williamstown is known for its support of education in general and of its public school in particular. Special funding opportunities are available to support innovative programming at the school. They are as follows: WESE (Williamstown Elementary School Endowment), Olmstead (a Williams College grant) , and the local PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). Parent volunteers and Williams College students are highly visible in all classrooms.

Pre-K - NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited program for three and four year-old children, half/full-day. Information about Side by Side. Information about the Side by Side lottery.

All Day Kindergarten - Williamstown was one of the first districts in the state to institute full day kindergarten.

Community Field Studies - Students explore local physical features, waterways, theater and the arts to enhance learning. Teachers collaborate with local organizations, museums, and Williams College on class field trips.

Words are Wonderful - Visiting authors program in the fall. Authors have included Andrea Wright Barrett, Suzanne Bloom, Todd Strasser and Elizabeth Winthrop. Click the link to learn more.

Shakespeare and Company Residency - 12 year residency with nationally recognized performance group working with fourth grade students and teachers.

Visual and Performing Arts - Integrated curriculum and performing arts, with full time art, vocal, music and instrumental teachers.

WKZ - Williamstown Kids Zone, a weekly news show developed and reported by "co-anchors" from the sixth grade. This weekly show is broadcasted live and is viewed by the entire school community. It has been expanded to include video transmission via Willinet every THURSDAY NIGHT AT 7:00pm.

Future Problem Solvers - Higher order thinking program for fifth and sixth grade students to work creatively in teams to solve real world problems. State/International competitors.

Community Garden/Outdoor Classroom - Outdoor science programming with mini-habitats developed and maintained by teachers and students.

Sunrise Spanish - Williamstown Elementary School offers a fee based Sunrise Spanish program for our K-6 students before school. The approach used in this program is interactive and high in energy. Children are physically and actively involved in listening and speaking activities, and later in reading and writing activities.

Second Step Program - Nationally recognized social skills program.
